Anti-3 star bases spread defenses across the entire base to run out the attack timer, accepting that the Town Hall may fall. Anti-2 star bases centralize the Town Hall with maximum protection, sacrificing outer buildings to prevent 50% destruction.
The fundamental difference is what each design prioritizes. Anti-3 star bases accept a 2-star result but make it extremely difficult to clear the remaining 50%+ of buildings within 3 minutes. Anti-2 star bases protect the Town Hall at all costs, using it as the last building to fall.
In practice, anti-3 star bases place high-HP buildings (storages, Army Camps) in corners and edges that require troops to walk long distances to reach. Anti-2 star bases pull all protection toward the center, often leaving outer compartments relatively weak.
Use anti-3 star bases for Clan Wars, CWL, and competitive play. In wars, preventing a 3-star is worth far more than preventing a 2-star because the marginal star determines war outcomes.
In Clan Wars, a base that consistently gives up 2 stars but prevents 3 stars is significantly more valuable than a base that sometimes gets 1 star but occasionally gives up 3. The math is clear: a 2-star averages 2 stars given, while an unreliable anti-2 star base might average 2.5 stars given (mixing 2-star and 3-star results).
CWL especially favors anti-3 star design because each star counts individually toward clan ranking. A base that consistently limits attackers to 2 stars accumulates fewer total stars against your clan over 7 war days.
Use anti-2 star bases for trophy pushing in Titan and Legend League, and for protecting your league bonus in multiplayer. In these contexts, preventing the Town Hall from falling preserves your trophies and league standing.
Trophy pushing requires a different defensive philosophy. In Legend League, you face 8 attacks per day with no shield generation. An anti-2 star base that consistently limits attacks to 1 star (Town Hall survives) preserves more trophies than an anti-3 star base that always gives up 2 stars.
The calculation changes because in multiplayer, a 1-star defense loses fewer trophies than a 2-star defense. At 5500+ trophies, every star matters for maintaining your rank. Anti-2 star designs with centralized Town Hall protected by multiple Inferno Towers and the Grand Warden are optimal.
